Even before returning to Cape Breton, I’ve thought a lot about the things, the objects, the places, that act as triggers for emotion and memory. Often I isolate those objects in the painting and fill in the backgrounds with textures and patterns that evoke the era of my past. These paintings also are sometimes crossed with the small and banal series which often focuses on objects we choose to create as ceramic tchotchkes (e.g., My Porcelain Summer).
